  1. wouldnt that depend on where your coming from?

  2. Basically, all airlines have the same flight costs to cover; aircraft, fuel etc.

The variables come in terms of number of in-flight crew, land based facilities, etc

On a long haul flight such as Australia, any savings in variables are much more spread across the larger fixed costs, so no-one can come in particularly below anyone else.

The real cost variable comes in terms of service & safety; think Garuda crash v. BA near crash earlier this year (or was it last year now?).

The cheaper airlines do not have the same level of aircraft maintenance and pilot experience & competence that the more reputable ones do. Also, many of the low cost flights stop like commuter busses and it can take days to reach Australia. Have you ever hung around various out-of-the-way airports for 4-6 hours at a time?

Its all a simple question of getting what you pay for. The decision is yours.

Also, I might point out that December is the beginning of summer over here and heading towards Christmas. This is one of the peak periods for airflight to Australia and the airlines jack up their prices at this time accordingly.

  3. Could you go a week or two earlier?  The cheapest fares are in the low season, which is May-June and November.  Go before the end of November if you can.  I found Malaysian airlines to have good prices, the time I was researching costs.

  4. if you are flying from asia or the pacific fly jet star

if you are coming from honolulu, for example, and you want a one way ticket your looking at about $400-$500 for lowest class, $929 for second class and just over $1000 for first class.

this is so much cheaper compared to qantas and virgin etc.

  5. Flights are more expensive during december... Just thought I'd let you know that.

Where are you flying from? that would help.

  6. Garuda Airlines.

(However, most insurance companies won't touch you.)

  7. australia is a really expensive place anyway so even when you get there you still have to think about expenses - depending on where you're coming from prices can vary but all prices will be pretty much the same once they've added tax and fuel charges. fuel cost is really high at the moment so that will make an unrealistically cheap flight suddenly one of the most expensive. just choose a trusted or recommended airline from friends and take their advice because there won't be much difference. at the moment all flights are costing about the same which isn't particularly cheap especially due to the rising cost of petrol. december could be quite expensive because it's christmas time and summer time.

  8. no matter what airline it'll be expensive.

do what i did and go in their winter. melbourne will be cold but places like sydney, cairns darwin and alice springs will have tolerant temperatures. also you'll be lucky to get cheap accomodation in sydney in december without something moving on the floor :S
