  1. What kind of question is that? That's like saying is it cheaper to do a tune up on a 4 cyl, or a v-8? If your main goal is just to commute, than perhaps you better stick to a car. They are much safer for dummies, and the people who have to drive around the dummies. Good luck!

  2. Quite alot cheaper.

Bikes are much lighter, and cheaper on insurance. They get great gas mileage.

  3. figure your gas mileage, a bike will average 45 mpg, how much does your car get?

  4. What kind of gas mileage do you get with your 2 liter engine? 28 to 30 MPG? if that's the case, a motorcycle will definitely beat that.  You can get anywhere from 40 to 60 MPG on a motorcycle ~ depending on what kind of bike it is. Take a motorcycle rider's safety class before you start commuting. It's worth every penny, and it goes a long way in boosting your confidence on the road.

  5. Actually it could be considered debatable. Some bikes need a lot of maintenance and the parts don't last nearly as long. Insurance is less. Model selection is probably the determining factor. There can be reliability factors and the inconvenience and expense of more frequent breakdowns, mechanical problems and time spent in the shop. I routinely spend more on mechanical expenses, mile for mile, on a larger bike than my 2L car. In short it depends very much on the size and reliability of the model that you pick. I'd go with a used, smaller BMW motorcycle- but the initial cost is quite high.

  6. Also depends on how much you drive.. the other posts had good info.  Myhubby bought a cycle to drive 200 miles RT daily.. .2x a week he takes the truck and tows motorcycle down and back and parks the truck.

Things to consider.  If you have job you are driving too you now need grooming supplies kept at work so you look decent.  If its hot you need camelback to water yourself.  If it cold you need thermal suit. It you are i heavy traffic its very dangerous. you should drive a smitchy slower and stay safer.

You also now add on time to pack up everything you need onto the bike and off bike..

Insurance is lots cheaper but with prices of some cars I really think he could have done better with high mieage smaller car and payments forever.

Right now the stinking bike gets about 15 less than it should (35 - maybe 40 per gallon).   If we had smaller car he would have had a/c and it would be a breeze, jump in the car and go with a/c and radio for company on the long rides.

  7. Well I have a 750CC gas guzzler bike and I get 45MPH riding moderately. My car (Nissan 1.8) gets 30 to 35MPG so....

Depends on the bike. Some bikes get 60MPG but then what would you do during inclimate weather?

Insurance is cheaper than a car. Maintenance is cheaper because most of the upkeep you'd do yourself.
