How cheaply can I get to Alicante from UK?

Flights are far too expensive, these days. I want to visit my family in Alicante for Christmas. I've tried looking for fares for rail and Eurostar on-line but am finding the websites a nightmare to navigate. Eurostar assumes I own a car, and most websites cannot offer a fare that far in advance.

Has anyone travelled to Alicante by rail recently, or by a combination of rail and then flights from France? What route/methods did you take and how much did it cost, please? Links to anywhere I can book and view prices on-line would be great!

Have you tried the low cost airlines such as jet 2 or fly monarch. I work for a travel company, and have seen some good fares around recently. As long as your flexible on where you can fly from, you may get a fairly good deal
