The political stability allowed arts and literature to flourish, however, the committents were the noblemen and the noblemen were Spanish, so the artists had to cater to their tastes.

    A lot of Italian words are derived from Spanish - appartamento, azienda, bagarino, baccalà, camorra, gaglioffo, marrano, picaro etc.

    In an unrelated historical episode, a town in Sardinia, Alghero, was repopulated with people of Catalan origins and they still speak it.
