medic I must say I like your answer the best however I don't think it will be that long for hovercrafts/jetson cars.

  1. We have plenty of cars that runs without roads.  they are called OFF ROAD vehicles (like 4WD trucks.)

We are NOT close to cars without gas.  Even though we have the technology, we do not have the engineering to mass produce them at affordable prices.

For example:  We know that hydrogen cars (NOT HHO scam) can run with 0% pollutant and 0% gasoline.  But we just cannot make them cheap enough.

    Good Luck...

  2. About 45 minutes away.

  3. For cars without gasoline as fuel 15 years as readily available I'd say 30 years till gone, without roads... If you mean hover cars, I'd say 50 years or so. if you mean flying cars like the Jetsons I'd have to say over 75 years.

hydrogen and other fuels are available, but the infrastructure isn't in place and that is VERY expensive.

Electric cars are on the road, but don't expect the best electric  to come from Detroit, I'd look to Japan or China or the EU to get it right first.  They have more to gain by making a better car first.

as to cars, with no roads, once again the concept has been around for a long long time, think centuries, but making it practical and safe has still been a big problem.

A better solution, and more cost effective is a much better rail system, in Europe or Japan the rail service is extremely reliable, fast and efficient.

In the USA rail service is an embarrassment, the service is spotty at best and no surprise why ridership is so low outside of the northeast where cities are closer together and it is easier to absorb costs of maintenance.

Most of the rail lines are in need updating, the railroads are trying hard but cost of maintenance makes the business a rough go. Until there is enough complaining the rail system will continue to languish behind more public but less efficient projects.

  4. There are already cars that run on diesel.  Many of them can go offroad.
