Question:

How close do employers for a teaching position look at grades from college?

I have just received my Associates from community college and will be beginning the University in the August for Elementary Education. I have a 3.2 grade point average so far. It isn't horrible, but I am still disappointed in some of my lower grades I have on my transcript. I have gotten straight A's in my education classes. But I have a good amount of C's and one D on my transcript and it bothers me. I know I am probably looking too much in to this, but I was just curious if anybody had any knowledge of how close individual grades are looked at for a teaching position. Or do they look more at the overall GPA?

  1. I've never heard of anyone asking to see transcripts for GPA's. All I was asked to show is a copy of my credential. I wouldn't worry about it. Good luck!

  2. Depends on the school you will be applying for but usually they look at the overall GPA. If they do notice the low grades they would probably ask you about it so better have a good explanation. Some don't mind if the low grades are just for minor subjects. You said you have straight A's in your education subjects. Just hope that they will notice it.

You will also probably have an opportunity to do practice teaching work before you graduate. Choose a school where you would want to build your teaching career. If they would be impressed with you as a student teacher then they would probably hire you on the basis of your performance not for your grades. Getting good grades is one thing but the actual teaching experience is another.  You get better as a teacher not solely because of the things you know but what you learn along the way.
