How close is Jackson Mississippi to the beach?

I am researching for my family vacation next year. I want the kids to be able to expirience a train ride. I would also like them to be able to go to a beach where there is actually blue water and white sand, not brown water and brown sand like we have in Galveston. The train goes to Jackson, and I've heard that Miss is the closest place with a nice beach to us. I have no idea, though, what part of Miss Jackson is in.

  1. about 3 hours or 150 miles.

if you want to see a beautiful beach with white sand, you will need to continue on to gulf shore, alabama.

  2. I agree with Doodles.  The Mississippi Gulf Coast is beautiful in its own way, or was so pre-Katrina, but for nice beaches you need to go at least to Gulf Shores, Alabama.  I looked on the Amtrak website and noticed there is some service that goes to Pensacola, Florida.  It does not appear as a "station" if you go directly to the Amtrak stations list, and there does not appear to be a named route servicing the area, but if you look on the maps, particularly the interactive map, it looks like Pensacola service is offered.

Jackson is pretty far away from that area and you would have at least a three to four hour ride from there to decent beaches (Destin is my personal favorite).  You should call Amtrak to confirm whether this is a regular stop.
