  1. Forget the car lengths & miles per hour & how much of the tires you can or can't see.

In good weather & conditions, stay a minimum of 3 seconds behind.  Increase the time as weather or conditions worsen.

The only time you won't be at fault when you hit somebody in the rear is if they're backing up!

  2. you need to see their left rear tire on the pavement,if youcant see their tire on the pavement your too close!

  3. Pick a spot on the side of the road and as the car in front passes it ,say "Only a fool breaks the three second rule"and if the road is wet add "And today it's raining".If you pass the chosen mark before you finish the phrase you are too close.

  4. is not such a good idea to drive or stop so closely of front cars I hate people who do that because they can't know what is in front  of the "front car" and if it have to stop for anything unexpectedly the reflects of the second driver will be slow to stop at the same time and inevitably will hit the first car

Take you distance. when you stop you have to see the entire front car even the wheels so if you not even see the rear bumper you probably  be  hitting the front car

  5. Always leave enough room so that if a car brakes suddenly, you have time to react. You should be able to see the rear tires on the car in front of you.

  6. 2 car lengths for the first 10 mph add one car length for every 10 mph after that. Examples 20 mph 3 car lengths 50 mph 6 car lengths. This of course gets longer as conditions get worse.

  7. 2 to 4 seconds behind is the general rule....
