  1. the stock ans is 2.5 million light years and andromeda. the true ans . is we haven't a clue . our only yardstick is the red shift and more problems with that pop up every day.

  2. Kevin Sorbo went there the other day, he said it only felt like a few miles.

  3. Andromeda is nearest galaxy to our own. It's approximately  2,540,000 light years away!

  4. 2.5 million light years/Andromeda Galaxy

  5. Andromeda galaxy is located 2.3 million light years away.

  6. Stilldebuggin is right. Andromeda is the nearest spiral galaxy, but there are dwarf galaxies closer.  In fact, the Milky Way is currently colliding with a couple.

  7. "The Andromeda Galaxy (IPA: /ænˈdrɒmədə/, also known as Messier 31, M31, or NGC 224; often referred to as the Great Andromeda Nebula in older texts) is a spiral galaxy approximately 2.5 million light-years away[4] in the constellation Andromeda. It is the nearest spiral galaxy to our own, the Milky Way."

  8. Scientists used to think that Andromeda galaxy was the closest, until two smaller galaxies were discovered much closer.

A small "dwarf" galaxy called Sagittarius Dwarf was discovered in 1994. It is currently 70,000 light years from Earth, which is very close in astronomical terms.

There's actually one that's closer still.  The closest (known) neighboring galaxy was just discovered in 2003.  It is called the Canis Major Dwarf Galaxy, and is currently only 25,000 light years from Earth.

Both dwarf galaxies are in the process of being torn apart and swallowed by our own large galaxy.  In fact, some speculate that Earth and the rest of our solar system were originally a part of Sagittarius Dwarf that got pulled into the Milky Way about 2 billion years ago.

  9. 2.52 million light years away - Andromeda Galaxy

or in scientific notation 3.97 * 10^17 km
