  1. The moment you leave solid ground, whether you're on a dock or not.

  2. I always wear a life jacket whether I'm in a boat, kayak, or even wading.  Passing ships a mile away can pull an undertow then throw a big wave.  Both actions can be disaterous to a wader.  All kinds of things can and DO happen.  Better to be SAFE.

  3. In a boat? Always wear one.

Wade fishing, wear one until your back to the car. You can drown in a teaspoon full of water.

The shock is what kills you when it hit's your lungs, not the depth of the water.

  4. Put it on when headed to the water always better tobe safe.

  5. All good answers above me except for Johnny Boys.  I am a Master Diver and I put on my life jacket while I'm on shore.  You can never tell what is gona happen.  I kayak fish, say I get a leg cramp, and tip over, not a good situation to be in, but I have a pfd on and I don't have to worry.

  6. As soon as  you step into a boat it should be worn, ive seen lots of anglers fall between the dock and the boat, but were wearing life jackets which saved them, if your wading a  river i also advise it, if your wading a lake that your not used to i also suggest a life jacket as there can be steep shelves.
