How close is the movie "Nicholas Nickleby" (starring Anne Hathaway) to the original book? Thanks!

  1. It's been a while since I've seen the film, but I believe it's a relatively good adaptation. They leave out some people and quite a few important scenes (like the real downfall of the Squeers). However, as I recall, the "spirit" or essence of the book remained.

    One thing I'll tell you: The 2001 version of The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby starring James D'Arcy was a better adaptation. This version is longer than the Anne Hathaway version (around 200 minutes as opposed to a bit over 2 hours), it sticks closer to the book and retains more of the essence of it, explains things better and the actors are a better fit for the characters they are playing.

    The book, of course, is better than either. It was a truly wonderful story.
