  1. He was pretty close. The New York Rangers offered him an offer sheet of $21 million over three years after the 1996-97 NHL season (which was a whole lot of money back then). He signed this offer sheet, but because he was a restricted free agent, the Avalanche had the right to match it, and they did, so he remained an Av.
