How cold can it be for a 2 stroke outboard?? will it sezi?

im looking into getting a 14 foot fishing boat with 2 stroke 33hp Johnson from my friend. how cold can the water be to use it? i know my jet skies it has to be at least 60 degrees or it could siez. i want to be able to use this boat even when it gets cold.

  1. As long as it's liquid your good to go.  They use 2strokes in snowmobiles, and I have driven one at -25C up in Canada.  So 2 strokes are not inherently more cold sensitive than 4 strokes.

  2. As long as the temperature is above freezing, you're good to go. You might want to put in a new pump impeller. It is rubber and if old may be brittle when cold.

  3. if there's water there, it'll run.

    just be sure to let the powerhead drain before trailering home.

  4. I know that we have used our small outboards all winter when hunting, including having to break ice to hunt a river blind.  Never had an outboard seize or heard of one doing so because of cold water. That was a Johnson 25 hp outboard.

    I have fished in December and January with ice on the boat and hanging from the lines with no problem too. That was with a Yamaha 225 outboard.
