How cold can it get in winter in London?

Ie. Roughly in degrees centigrade?

I will be moving to the UK soon and needed to know what type of clothing to pack.

  1. Snow is pretty rare, and doesn't last.

    Daytime temperatures below freezing are not the norm.

    but it's often a damp cold, which catches out some people accustomed to a colder but dryer winter.

    The chart below gives *averages*: there's always room for the exceptional.

    Central London is actually a couple of degrees warmer than the outer districts, due to the effect of building heating plants: a recognised microclimate.


  2. March winds can be brutal, so you need to be prepared with tights, boots, wool coat, and wool or cashmere scarves.  Roll neck pullovers, wool trousers, skirts.  Definitely gloves.

    Take several coats if you can, as the temps vary so widely--a mac for rain and cool weather, a leather jacket for fall, and a long nice wool coat and a puffer jacket for the cold.
