Question:

How cold is to cold to hit my driver?

I just went out today and hit my brand new Hi Bore XL Tour Driver. I've been wanting to get some practice in with it. It was cold outside (not quite 50 degrees with lots of wind), at least cold for us Texans. I never thought about the possibliity that it could hurt my driver.

I probably hit about 30 or so drives with it. Do I have anything to worry about? I was hitting it really well, and I hope it doesn't lose any pop when Spring roles around.

Your response is appreciated.

  1. The main thing to be aware of when hitting in cold weather it that the epoxy can become brittle, but this is more of a problem on much older clubs, not ones of current design. It may also be strenuous on the shaft's fibers, but again, only on much older clubs.

By "cold", I mean down in the single digits (F) and lower. If it got up to 50° this time of the year where I live, I'd probably play 36 holes!

  2. Nope i've played in the snow with the temp about 15

  3. Do you know any softball players? They will likely tell you to use caution hitting anything titanium below 40* f, the material has in some cases shown to be brittle in very cold weather. All of your other clubs should be fine.

  4. I'd worry more about your back than the driver.

  5. You have nothing to worry about in 50 degree weather..I live in Wisconsin and have played in the low 40s high 30s and nothing has every happend.

  6. It's not a concern. I've played in sub-freezing temperatures several times. 50 degrees is shorts and shirt sleeves for me.
