How come Central/European pretzels are bread products eaten in the same way as a bagel, but pretzels in the US

The US also has soft pretzels, but they are made with different ingredients so they don't taste the same.Actually, I believe the US pretzel tastes more like a bagel. In Germany people often eat pretzels for breakfast with fresh butter. Or as a snack in the afternoon. I don't know how to describe the taste, but it is different than american pretzels.
