How come I didn't feel the Illinois earthquake this morning?

I woke up this morning because my dog wanted to go outside to use the bathroom. I brought him back in and my wife said he was crying when he came back in. It was around the time the earthquake was happening in Salem, Illinois. I didn't feel anything but several people were calling into the news stations saying that they felt something. Is it possible or were they just trying to get on the news?

  1. I live in the suburbs of Chicago and I didn't feel it but my bird woke me up when he started panicking in his cage so he must have felt it and I didn't.  My friend called me saying he didn't feel it but he has 2 birds and they did the same thing.  Animals can sense better than humans.

  2. i live just outside mt.carmel, il close to where it was at and we FELT it.  it was kind of weird.  Since we aren't used to stuff like that it took me a couple of seconds to realize what was going on.  it didn't wake my 3yo up though.

you must have really been asleep because it lasted for about 30-45 seconds and we had family in bowling green ky and indianapolis, IN feel it also.

10:17pm---did you just feel that????  another aftershock.  my friends called to make sure they weren't freaking out for nothing.  the animals in our neighborhood are going CRAZY!!!  Gosh, i really hope you get to feel one sometime.  it only lasted about 5 seconds....but at least you'd get a little taste of it

did you feel the one that hit around 10:15?  it lasted for 15-20secs.

pretty cool to get to experience something like that.  i'm glad it wasn't like what they get in CA though.  it did leave a samll crack in our bedroom wall.

  3. Earthquakes are strange. They can be felt very strongly on sandy soil, but if you live on a more rocky soil you wont feel them as strongly. We have rarely felt any in our  home and we live in California (this house for 28 years), and my aunt who lives about 10 blocks from us feels them all. Also, it depends on how the shakes and how far the shockwaves are sent out. They aree very interesting to read about. I'm happy there wasn't allot of damage in your area!

  4. it is possible because i woke up around 4:35 this morning, and i felt my bed shaking and i heard my TV shaking and it felt like the roof was gonna clapse on me! it was very freaky

  5. Yes, it was real!  I felt it.  Funny, because the first one was around 5:30am.  I woke up at that time, looked at the clock, and then went back to sleep.  The second one, I was sitting here, and everything started shaking and rattling.  It was friggin weird.

The one above me says that we can feel earthquakes better on sandy soil.  That makes sense why I felt it then because I live right along the beach!  Very interesting.

  6. omg!!! your dog was crying cuz he sensed the earthquake.

I lived inCA for 23 years the landers quake had all the dogs in hte neighborhood whining 2 hours before it hit...you might 've been sleep walkin? lol
