How come NATO wont let georgia join?

It isn't that they won't LET them join... They don't actually meet the normal criteria.

Like Nicolas said, the US is behind their application. Bush needed all the troops he could convince to assist in the Mid-East, that was the deal.

I don't know the official NATO line, but i feel Georgia have a long way to go before they can put other member nations at risk.

As the NATO moto says an attack on one is an attack on all, if this weekend was a year down the line WW3 could have started all because Georgia thought they could flex there my friends are bigger than your friends attitude.

Believe me they only started this war with Russia because they believed the US would bail them out, this is a total irresponsible attitude to have on the world stage I'm afraid :)

On a side note my mom thought Russia was attacking Georgia the STATE this morning. She was wondering why the USA was not bombing the h**l out of Russia at that point. I found that funny then explained to her Georgia is a small country on the south eastern range of the black sea. NATO will let Georgia join, otherwise they should learn how to play ball.

There seems to be a split within NATO, with some European member States supporting a softly, softly lets wait and see apraoch and others, notably the US wanting a firmer commitment that NATO will admit Georgia.

It could be argues that Georgia should be admitted to NATO asap, along with Ukraine. This action would ensure peace. Russia would not have invaded Georgia was she a NATO member.

We must remember that S.Ossetia is de jure (legally) Georgian national territory, just as the other breakway region of Abkhazia is. Georgia did not invade Russia, Georgia moved to retake its own territory. It is Russia who invaded Georgia!

Russia is saying it cares for the people of the Caucusus, yeah right, the world saw just how much Russia cares about Chechnya. Russia claims that the ethnic minorities in Georgian (S.Ossetian and Abkhaz) should eb free to decide their own future....wonder why the Russians don't extend the same logic to ethnic minorities (Chechens and others)within the Russian Federeation?

My country, Ireland, is not part of NATO nor do we want to be but we recognise aggression, having suffered it ourselves for hundreds of years.

Russia is fast running out of friends.

All member states must agree on allowing a new member into NATO. France and Germany object to Georgia joining because they are afraid of angering Russia, who provides most of their energy/natural gas.

The era of NATO and the UN is coming to an end, they have both become a hindrance to any possibility of a calm world. It is time for the world to come up with a better organization to full fill the jobs of these two lame ducks.

Georgia can't join NATO because we all know if Russia invades Georgia fully nobody is going to help defend them. The most powerful alliance in history (NATO) has been proven a lame duck by Russia. Massive massive humiliation for the west to be honest.
