Question:

How come a gas station charged me for $97 when I only paid for $40 of gas?

I was driving through canada and filled up some gas. I even printed a receipt that charged me around $40. I paid with a debit card and when I come home to check my bank statement, it says it has charged me $97 dollars.

Is this a mistake of the gas station, fraud, or I've heard somewhere that gas stations will first take a certain amount of money out before you fill up and then return it to you?

Thanks

  1. Many gas stations in America used to charge a fee before allowing pumping to make certain there are enough funds in the account.  They would then hold the amount for anywhere from 3 to 6 weeks before refunding the difference.  However it was usually an even number (50 or 100 dollars)  I would contact my bank placing an inquiry on the charge; provide them with a copy of the receipt.  Also call the gas station and find out if they have a similar policy and if so how long before the remainder is refunded.  If the bank inquiry and the gas station don't find an immediate answer I would then move from an inquiry to a dispute of charges.  Just don't lose that receipt.

  2. As they say in Canada .....you got Fuqued...Ehe !

  3. they must've seen u coming ...

  4. may canadian dollars....

  5. God bless the banks. They have charged you the exchange plus another charge for converting the Canadian Dollar amount to USA currency. And the they probably added a charge for a cross border payment transfer. The Canadians didn't s***w you; your own bank did.

Go down to your bank and get a detailed statement. You would be surprised at what they reward you with when you shop out of country.

  6. i hope you kept your receipt.  gas stations take cash when you fill up and return your change so you don't drive off without paying.  maybe the card was still active when the next person pulled up.
