  1. Nursing is a good field but black women don't just major in nursing.  Dance, law, theater and many other fields as well.

  2. There is a huge demand for nurses.  I, also, think, because we are always taking care of people.

  3. It's a lucrative, people centered career. A lot of the "Work your way out of the ghetto" speakers are doctors so a medical career is often held up as a respectable and honorable way to "make it good."

By and large, women who go into a medical career become nurses, men tend to be doctors.  If you ignore the loudmouthed jocks at your school I'll bet you find most the black students are studying to be doctors.

  4. most want to be doctors or engineers from what i see

  5. Because they aren't smart enough to get into med school, or study engineering.

  6. i dont but then im mixed with black and puerto rican.

but im majoring in theater arts and minoring in journalism.

  7. Why do you care??

But I don't think that's always true, although my mom is a nurse and she wants me to be a nurse, but it ain't gonna happen.

I plan to major in journalism, so that stereotype is false.

God, how many MORE stereotypes are people gonna come up with about black women?? I guess we are more important than people try to play off.

  8. just be thankful they are going to college

  9. I noticed that also. It could be a family thing, and maybe alot of us want to be nurses. I majored in nursing because I wanted to become on OB/GYN, but after working at my cousin's D.O., I quickly changed my mind to I.T.

  10. Wow. You are just a little too observant of Black women. And nursing is a great field with great pay. You act like wanting to be a nurse is a bad thing. My mom is a nurse and she loves what she does. But, I don't share her passion for nursing. Most of the black women I know (and trust me I know a lot) are either majoring in Business, Marketing, or to become an Engineer. I only know a couple of Black women who want to be nurses. So if that is the case, it may just be where you live.

  11. NOT TRUE.

  12. Ha! I'm black and I'm majoring in Film and Television. But I have notice there seems to be some black women majoring in nursing. But who gives a d**n? What someone goes to college for is their business.

  13. because it's a great field to be in. It's not really that flexible but it does pay the bills. And it's a job that's almost guarenteed because of the shortages of nurses.

  14. hmmm interesting, never notice.

  15. Because they look good in the white outfits!

  16. Why do you care...?

  17. Could it be that they are a nurturing people.

  18. Huh?..Why would you notice something like that? Somebody has way too much time on their hands..

  19. so they can turn "whitey" away and let them die!!!!!!!

Do you have a pie chart? maybe a graph..I wanna see some statistics!

  20. i don't think that it is a BLACK WOMEN thing I think that is a big major for most women in general I am just happy for the african american women out there doing it for themselves cause they could be living on welfare or something worst.... good for the black women and i hope the stereotype stays true keep it up GGGGGGGGOOOOOOOOOO BLACK WOMEN! GET THE EDUCATION!!!!

  21. I teach at a university, and most of the black females I have in class are education majors.  All of the nursing students I can remember coming through my class were white or latino.

  22. They are good at working with folks. That's called a people person.

Some have it and most don't.

  23. I've never noticed this. I used to work for a University and I saw black women and men going for diverse degrees. Mostly business, pre-law, and pre-med. I currently work as a tech in a research laboratory and see a lot of hospital personnel, I don't really notice a disproportionately large percentage of black female nurses. Nursing is a great field. It attracts people from a lot of different backgrounds.

  24. That's such stereotyping. It is not true.

  25. Really?

I've never noticed a trend among them, then again I can name 5 female family members in either social services or nursing so maybe you are right. I don't know its just where I'm from most have leaned towards a variety of things.

    I'm in Industrial Design though.

  26. WTF?

Do you have any proof Sirma'am?

  27. Because so many of our mothers, aunts, grandmothers, and even great-grandmothers were nurses.

Up until not so long ago, nursing was one of the few educated professions deemed appropriate for women (along with teaching), particularly for black women.  It is still traditional in many families for women to study nursing, even if they end up in some other healthcare profession.

I was the oddball in my family who majored in science and engineering.  Everyone from my mom to my great-great-grandmother studied nursing.

  28. It's an excellent field that's high in demand. Smart women.

  29. because it probably pays a lot

some probably want to go on to be doctors

or some wanted to be doctors and just settled on being nurses

  30. It's a field that doesn't take in all the baggage you have. Anyone can be in those fields. I also know they like teaching too

  31. I think a lot of young women who are in a financial struggle or maybe women who have babies are in nursing school because it's a quick program.  And unfortunately, because of the dynamic of our society today, a lot of black women are single mothers who come from a family with financial struggles.  I think that's the real answer to your question.  I'm a black woman, and I'm in college majoring in international business.
