The chicken is too worried about crossing the road to try.

More realistically, evolution has produced some birds that can make a wide variety of sounds in nature probably for calling between mates when there are a lot of mates and a lot of other bird sounds in the jungle and some of those birds are flexible enough to make human type sounds.

Theoretically because of the physical makeup in their throats, ALL birds have the ability to talk, even canaries.  It's been speculated that parrots developed the ability to mimic sound as a means of defense against predators. Also, parrots are very intelligent birds, with an IQ equivalent to that of a 3 to 5 year old child,........much more than chickens.

I have 12 pet chickens and they are not very smart.  They just have small brains.  

Examples:

If you turn off the lights they will fall asleep.

If they are being chased by your lab and you grab the lab they will stop running and start scratching for bugs even if you still don't have a good grip on your dog.

Roosters will fight even if you isolate them from all the hens.

Roosters attacked me, but let the hens be eaten by hawks and dance for dogs that want to eat them.

Chickens will run away from you but jump into a dog pen.
