How come address are spaced apart so much in the country and close together in the city?

How come in the city address are like 1,2,3,4,5,6

and in the country they are more like 1,4,9,11

Communities in the country have in the past, dwindled, leaving houses to go derelict, and later knocked down e.g Romney marsh

Other houses may be knocked together, for instance, a house down my road that was once 7 houses!!

Also, if houses are really far apart, it could be allowing land in between to be built on.
