How come alligators can survive up to a year without food?

    Naa...really it has something to do with them being cold blooded and their metabolism

  3. Alligators, like snakes, have extremely low metabolism. Snakes can take up to a month to digest a big meal and go for up to 2 years without another meal.  

  4. a lot of reptiles can go a long time w/out food and that's b/c they are cold blooded. They heat their bodies from the warmth of the sun and atmosphere. We, as in humans and mammals, need to eat all the time b/c our body creates our warmth and it requires a lot of energy to keep our systems going. Reptiles can hibernate or shut part of their systems down to save on energy and they can also live off of fat stores just like bears when hibernating.
