How come buildings in Venice don't errode away and collapse?

I saw on Casino Royale that they have these blow up things in the basement, is that right?

  1. Venice is partly built on pileworks made of wood and partly on pre existent islands , means that just half of the city stands on wood piles... You can tell when you're walking on an island cos the ground looks kinda regular , and when you see it being very irregular means it's on the piles... I heard wood kinda absorbed well water so it became stronger , and that's why Venice doesn't collapse . ANYWAY , Venice IS slowly collapsing. Waves done by boats are the most dangerous effect for Venice stability....not only little boats: think that huge cruise boats pass everyday in front of St Marks square, just to give tourists a nice sight when they arrive or they go away by boat...Imagine the disasters
