  1. I use chopsticks and a Chinese soup spoon nearly everyday - it's more refined and gentle than knife & fork. Helps one to eat less, enjoy more.

  2. i guess it's tradition. they didn't realy know about forks until the rest of the world evolved, they probably got the news last considering the fact that recieving worldy news was entirely slow and b/c asia's halfway across the world.

  3. Why do Americans use spoons/forks?  So they can shovel more into their mouths' and gain more weight?

I'm thinking Americans should start using chopsticks exclusively so they get frustrated with eating and lose some weight.

  4. During the olden days, chinese people are basically and they toiled the earth. Their hands get dirty easily and therefore chopsticks was created to enable them to eat and immediately thereafter to return back to work.

  5. I wonder, maybe you have never noticed how thin most are...

Wowsers, it takes a lot of dexterity to use chopsticks; I know I can't do it properly.

  6. Because it's part of their culture, and I personally find it a more refined method of eating.

Now do us a favor: take the nearest fork and shove it where the sun don't shine for your ignorant comments.

  7. The REAL reason chopsticks are used instead of forks and knives is due to confuciouism.  Knives and forks were considered smilar to weapons and it was better to have items no related to violent weaponry so chopsticks were used in their stead.  To be quite honest, chopsticks, when used with skill, are much better than forks, especially with noodles soups and other dishes.  It is considered much more proper to gently embrace the food up to the mouth instead of "forking" it which is considered inappropriate in certain cultures like Japan.  I am American, but I use chopsticks all the time just because they are so versatile.  Unlike one answerer said that we Americans "should use them to lose weight instead of shoving so much food in our mouth" really isn't so...you can grab a ton more noodles with chopsticks than you can a fork if you know how to use them right.  And, the Asians don't tank small, dainty bites as one might think.  They slurp those noodels up, shove the rice in their mouths with the chopsticks etc.  They chow down just as good as the rest of us.

  8. You're a little off in your facts.  Asians use chopsticks instead of forks. They use spoons all the time.

  9. why do we use spoons instead of chopsticks?

  10. They feel very connected to tradition, and chopsticks are part of their tradition and culture that makes them who they are.

  11. Chopsticks are part of our culture, we must lean to understand each other's differences.

BTW, we use Knife and Fork in China as well.

  12. If you look into the history of chopsticks, evidence shows that chopsticks were being used in 1600-1100 BC.  That's Before Christ!  More that 3,000 years ago... So there is a built-in tradition of using chopsticks in China and other parts of Asia.

Forks didn't appear until 1,000 AD... so chopsticks were around almost 1,500 years before the "invention" of the fork so 3,000 years ago, Europeans were eating with their hands.  Just think about that... there was no such thing as toilet paper and the Europeans ate with their hands - very uncivilized.  Chopsticks also represent a sense of culture and civility.

Even in the 21st Century, there is a sense of civility using chopsticks.  As someone mentioned earlier, forks and spoons allow people to shovel food to their mouths.  You might was well belly-up to a feeding trough.

Spoons were and very common in Asian culture.  How do you think they drink their soups?

  13. You eat with spoons? How crude.

  14. Chopsticks are actually pretty awesome- they allow you to get the food that you want and require very little washing up.

They can be made of any material (ive even seen marble ones).

Keep in mind that it isnt just chinese people that use chopsticks. Thats like saying why do americans use forks?

I often use chopsticks and a spoon, a lot easier to eat rice with a spoon.

  15. 1. Tradition

    2. Price

If you think about the poverty conditions over there, why would anyone buy silverware when you can just wittle 2 sticks for free?

  16. you are an idiot.

more people that use chopsticks in the world than those who don't.

whose to say you don't have it wrong.

  17. Who cares? I live in Scotland and use chopstick all the time, they totally rock!!!

  18. your a dumb racist biatchhh

  19. bcoz they think that they can attack any one at launch.

  20. We were raised that way it is easy for us to use especially the types of foods we eat. Actually when we eat noodles i think it looks cleaner eating it with chopsticks over forks it looks messier. Thats like me asking u why do u use forks instead of chopsticks we would both have the same answer hehe and we do use spoons and forks too by the way!!! :)
