How come everyone is so interested in Amsterdams coffee shops?

Can't people get stoned in their own countries. I sure can here in Canada.

No, people cannot get stoned in their own countries!

Most of the prisons in the US are filled with people who have

committed crimes involving drugs. Many of them only got popped with their own stuff. Not selling or dealing, just personal usage. In some countries being caught with weed

is punishable by execution.

Canada is one of the few countries that has somewhat

de-criminalized it, but not like the Netherlands.

So for someone who has been to Amsterdam many times and visited plenty of coffeeshops, I think it's nice that it's looked at differently here. Alcohol puts me to sleep so i cannot drink, but smoking a nice joint of some premium weed is by far a much better high to me than getting drunk.

Not everyone is interested in coffeeshops, I've met many tourists and locals here that do not partake.

Are there coffeeshops in Canada?

not in USA ...i think it's the fact that you can go hang out in public and get high and there is a selection of pot there.

i have always wanted to go there for vacation!

In most countries (if not all) you can get stoned as easy as in Amsterdam, and surely all laws, rules and regulations that go for Amsterdam also go for the rest of the country.

They state that drugs are illegal but not acted against if the rules are followed.

And only marijuana is not acted against, there is a serious fight against all harder drugs, which is way more effective than most other countries manage.

And indeed, a lot of Dutch do not really agree with the laws as they are, but even more would not like to change the easy going attitude but would still want the people abroad to understand that drugs are not the thing to come for.

Just as San Francisco will forever have the reputation of easy s*x because of the hippies banging it out with anyone and everyone there...

Most locals hate the official policy of tollerating drugs use, which attracts criminals from far and wide.

And most of the foreign kids coming here to get stoned are pretty much penniless so there's not a lot of money to be made from them by other industries (if they'd be even remotely interested in doing anything but blowing their brains out), while they do keep getting into trouble, costing a lot of money from healthcare and law enforcement.
