How come hotel rates are so high in Japan compare to the States?

Question

I stayed at one of Best Wetern here in the states, and it was less than 100 dollars per night (2 queen beds).

And the room was fairly big.

It is almost impossible to find that kind of hotel in Japan...

Why???

Also are there some hotels which have a kitchen???
