Question:

How come in some books there is more than one space in between the words?

E.g. Harry Potter, Goblet of Fire, page 624, first paragraph after the symbol, with the words 'celebration, when the winner of the Inter-House'.

Instead of that, it looks like this 'celebration, when the winner of the Inter-House'

I'm just curious!

Thanks,

  1. i guess it's typographical error

  2. There are a few possibilities.  Since I don't own the book you used as the example I will make a few suggestions.  You can work out for yourself which one applies (if any).

    1) Some books justify the text (so that the words line up neatly both sides of the page).

    2) Typeset error (too much space used between the characters)

    3) Editor/s missed the mistake before the book was printed

    4) Typographical error (typo) - similar to number 3

    5) Someone forgot to grammar/spell check.

    6) Usually there is one space after a comma and two spaces after a full stop (btw in America a 'full stop' is called a 'period')
