  1. Sunlight hits the Equator almost if not directly. Thus, sunlight hits southern states more directly, so the Sun provides more heat in those areas. In washington, sunlight is less direct, so it's cooler because the Sun can't provide as much sunlight (or heat).

There are other factors but that is the main cause.

  2. Let me add one correction. The equator is not the hottest place on Earth. It is hotter at 30° N & S latitude. A good book on climatology or ecology will explain it.

  3. Well because the Earth is tilting every minute, causing it too increase its temparature. Another reason is obviously "Global Warming"

  4. the way the earth is............

    I guess

Cause it is pretty hot in TX

  5. washington has a lot of cool air that blows in from the pacific ocean.  Its all about wind currents.

  6. There are many factors that contribute to temperature differences between areas. Overall your state will be cooler due to being situated further north from the equator than the other states. In addition you are on the coast and therefor receive the constant cooling winds which sweep the heat away and provides moisture for rain storms.

Humans also have an affect on temperature and areas with large urban areas with pavement and cars are hotter than natural landscapes.

  7. THE FARTHEST YOU LIVE FROM THE EQUATOR THE COLDER IT IS.

  8. you should be happy. i live in texas where its above 95 every single day for three months. be very happy.

  9. You're pretty much at the North end, and you get cooling from the Pacific.

  10. sheldon has it.

along the pacific coast, the wind blows inland all the time.

and the water temp is 55 or less.

so the air, which has been over the water for several days is also 55 degrees.

    it's also saturated -- nearly 100% humidity.

as soon as it goes over the hills, some of that water condenses, turning from gas to liquid.

when it does that, it gives up heat, warming the air.

if you check temperatures around the state, you'll notice the greatest difference is in air from one side to the other, of a mountain that it has gone over.

    that produces the most heating.

    and driest air.

those mountains go all along the coast, starting down around LA.

since you're the farthest north, you have the coldest water, and the coldest temperature.

after the air leaves you, it goes over the hills and heats up, so no place east of you has a chance to be cooler than you.

  11. because washington is farther north than most other states.

    duhh.

  12. There are a lot of contributing factors, one is that it is on the pacific coast.

I also live on the pacific coast, in southern Oregon.

and last week we were having a heat wave, because there was a high pressure area off from the coast of Oregon, which diverted the wind flow from us into Washington.

in the winter you are farther from the sun than many of the states.

but in the summer, Washington has an abundance of trees, and water, and this tends to cause the area to be cooler that areas without so much water, or trees.

also you live closer to the ice cap on the north pole.

After living for years in HOT central California, I really enjoy the cool summers here in Oregon.

  13. The equator, an imaginary line that goes around the middle of the earth horizontally, is where the hottest part of the earth is. since washington is north, it is colder.

  14. Well since Earth is on a tilt and as the Earth orbits the sun, different parts of the earth gets different temperatures b/c the tilt of the Earth and the sun differs(sun is reference point)  b/c the earth is moving like when the North America is in the summer, South America is in the winter b/c the earths tilt is making South America facing away from the sun and north america is tilitng towards the sun.

  15. I absolutely cannot believe that some people are trying to answer this "child"s" question. What kind of school doesn't teach geography. Surely in Washington they do. If they don't this country is in "big" trouble. Emily pull out a map & check it out. You would be surprized what you can learn. First though you must learn how to spell so you can find where you live. Just a sugjestion...peace..

  16. GLOBAL WARMING!!!!

  17. Be glad you are cooler. I am in the deep hot humid south! My electric bill is 300 dollars, makes me want to move to Oregon!

  18. Presumably, you live by Seattle.  Also, you probably  live by the Cascade Mountains which cause the moist air from the Pacific upwards forming clouds and causing rain.  The Pacific Ocean is pretty cold just west of there due to the prevailing currents.  Cool air coming off the cool ocean helps keep Washingtonians cool and wet.
