  1. Hola.  Waitering is considered somewhat a lucrative well-paying job in Mexico.  And because women are still treated as second class citizens and not breadwinners in their families, they are often not hired by employers.  Also due to a machismo type of society women are held back in so many different facets, i.e. learning english, finishing school, getting married/children really young and expected to stay home, etc.

  2. Grand Master B is really the correct answer.

Here in Acapulco you will find plenty of female waitresses. I'm reading between the lines of your question and will therefore agree withe Grandmaster B's answer.

Here in Acapulco you will never see a woman taxi driver or bus driver. I too had to ask "why". Men have a dominant role.

This I still don't quite get though. Most all pemex gasoline attendants are female. Alot of the trash picker uppers in the street are female. Don't know about you but I don't want my sweetheart smelling of either when she comes home :)

  3. How many cities, how many restaurants in Mexico have you visited?  There are plenty of female servers in Mexico.  In Mexico, if a woman is married and has children, she is more likely to stay home than in the U.S., so that could make some difference.  And maybe in some areas  male waiters predominate, but, many women  do work as waitresses.

  4. In Mexico like most of Latin America, there is a culture called machismo, meaning the man takes his dominance seriously. Also, in many countries, the men are the bread winners while the woman takes care of the house and the children. Might sound biased to the woman of America, but I can tell you that the divorce rate in Mexico is much lower compared to the US. In short, marriage involve team work and Mexicans are good at that. However, that is not to say that women are prohibited from working a waitresses im Mexico. I am sure there are restaurants there where woman are employed.

  5. Having worked in the restaurant business in Mexico, i can tell you that the standards for waitering there are very high, much higher than the average restaurant in the US. It is not considered an entry level or temporary  student job as it is in the US.  Men who become waiters, stay at the same place for years, making it less accesible to new comers. Working women gravitate more toward factory jobs. It is far more accesible to women to work in a factory than it is for men in Mexico.

  6. I ate breakfast in a VIPs restaurant this morning and we were attended by a female waitress. In fact, ALL of the waiters working at the place at that time were female (even the cooks), the only male employee I saw was the branch's manager.

You'll see plenty of women working as waitresses in chain esque restaurants like Toks, VIPs or Sanborns. It's actually unusual to be attended by a man in those kinds of places. You'll also see far more women than men attending customers in Fondas or Comida Corrida restaurants.

It is highly unheard of of women managing little taco stands though (you will see some quesadilla places run by women, but Tacos al Pastor places are always managed by men).

Regarding machismo, people seem to forget that mexican women can become relentless and can make their machist spouses their dominated little pets over the years. A lot of machist customs are changing as more women become educated and enter the workforce even after having children.

The fact that more women are learning that they can sue and send their spouses to jail if they abuse them is probably helping to change these bad customs. A lot of men are starting to fear for themselves everytime they travel by subway because a real (or even unproven) sexual harassment charge in the subway can send the guy to prision for up to 5 years even if the harassment was minor.

In my faculty (medicine of all careers), we're like 70% women and the female to men rate is getting more and more dominated by women. It's like male doctors are slowly becomming extinct in the country!!! O_o'

  7. The only places that I know have only male waiters in mexico are the nudie bars (all the girls are dancers).
