During a storm last night, lightning surged through our telephone lines and left smoke and flames coming out of the main socket. This morning I checked outside and our shed, which is way apart from the house, has a scorch mark circling all the way around the overhang of the roof but the rest is untouched. How so?!!!!

  1. YOU HAD A LIGHTNING HIT WHEN A STORM IS BAD AS I HAD IN EAST SUSSEX LAST NIGHT I PULLED THE PHONE SOCKET OUT.ITS THE SAFE THING TO DO

  2. Lightning bolts can be as high as 30,000 degrees Fahrenheit. The heat of the lightning probably made the marks on your shed. Lightning strikes in different places.

  3. lightening strikes things

  4. Because of the overhang, there was probably a bit of dry ground around the shed. When the lighting struck, the electricity travelled  over the wet ground and grass, but when it met the dry bits, it had no where to go but discharge into the air and this must have scorched the grass. The strike must have been somewhere away from the house and travelled to it, or else a direct hit would have had  done more serious damage.

  5. cause the lightening probably hit lt

  6. wow take some pics that sounds cool, yeah lightning can connect with a number of 'sprites' but usually only one, your shed must have given off a sprite so it connected with that but the main draw was to your house

EDIT:  im in west sussex and it wasn't to bad here but lots of rain
