How come lights on sky scrapers stay on at night even though the majority of offices close for at night?

You know the way in New York or anywhere with tall buildings the lights are always on even in the middle of night even though all those offices would only operate 9-6. Why is that? Are they just left on or what? Sorry if I sound dumb haha

i think it's because that some VIP always comes late, so the sky scrapers is always alight, second is because that the plane will see the building, the buliding is high and the plane always fly low when it's by the city... i think that's it

They DO NOT leave the lights on.  The lights are motion sensored.  Cleaning crews are working in the buildings at night.  And, Executives or high level managers get the window seats and tend to burn the midnight oil.  Either way, their motion keeps the lights on.

It has nothing to do with planes.  The red flashing lights at the top of the building are for planes.

Each floor also has an Emergency Light that always stays on.  For worker safety, they don't allow complete darkness if it can be helped.

I would agree that it has nothing to do with planes. There are antenna with lights on it and sometimes on the four edges of the building as well if it's alone or tallest. Like the Montparnasse tower in Paris.

Besides planes are not allowed to fly over major cities or at least downtown.

It's a big huge waste of energy...

Just a couple of answers:

1. Of course so planes don't hit them.

2. So cleaning crews can work.

3. So birds don't fly fly into them.

Can't think of any others.

leaving th lights on is a colossal waste of money and energy

the only reason i can think that they leave the lights on is so that planes dont hit them, also so that the cleaning/ security crews can see to work
