How come many insults are directed to "mother's"?

ie-"Say hi to your mom for me" "I (insert verb) your mom last night", "Yo mama" jokes, etc. How come we rarely hear insults dedicated to fathers? Is it traditionally a sexist thing to make jokes about one's mother?

Because most insults like that are made by boys that have been badly brought up, probably by abusive, retarded fathers and overly submissive women > hence those boys have no respect for women.

Because it's an easy ploy to make one defensive. And it always seems to work.

Sexist insults directed at Mom are an easy way to push someone's buttons. You don't even need to know much about another person's mother to score a "hit."  Fathers don't usually enjoy the same bond with their children as mothers do, so jokes targeted at Dad would require more personal knowledge of the target. Something that really touches a raw nerve.

That and perhaps there is the perception that Dad's skin is thicker and he can "handle it" better than Mom can, or that she needs someone to defend her honor--even if she may be d**n good at taking jerks down a notch. Not very flattering to one's own mother at all, really.

because people feel defensive of their mothers, especially men who have a special relationship with their mom.  when its just a joke insult, it can be funny - but i had an ex who felt free to talk up all my mom's faults.  even though some were true, i didn't want to hear about them - especially all the time.  she's my mom, and i love her just the way she is.  it hurts to hear something bad about her.

it is considered the best insult because usually children are closer to their mothers and thus feel  worse when someone insults their mother rather than the father

I get really pissed off when someone says something about my family, I don't care what they have to say about me. To say something about someones mum is generally a low blow and most people will take offence to it.

Ranking on moms has long been the to insult for ignorant people. It's hardly considered anything but sad.

because by insulting someone's mother that really offends people. it plays on someone's more sensitive side. which, in a fight, would catch them off guard.

I think it's because most people are closer to their mom so it's more personal if it's your mom also. Guys started those jokes it would be considered S****y if a girl said dad/father or g*y if a guy did. So I think there might also be a bit sexist. :/
