How come most people don't know how to merge two lanes into one?

It's simple: one left car, then one right car, one left, one right...

Why is there always some joker who won't follow the "one car" pattern and just wants to go ahead of everyone and not merge?

There's always the JERK who has to get ahead of any car, even one, even if he's turning or stopping within 50 ft.

You're lucky, I find that 3/4ths of the people around me tend to be unable to follow the simple left-right rule.

If you've never driven in tight traffic, then you wouldn't know.  And then there's the ones that don't care and try to re-write the rules.  This is a courtesy of the road.
