  1. Often the first pumpkins don't grow, they just shrivel up when the flower dies. Give your plant a few more weeks and it should have pumpkins that don't die.

  2. It is possible that the flower(s) and fruit that fall off were not fertilized. The "male" flowers have a longer stem (6 plus inches, usually) and are almost always the first to appear. They always fall off, not producing fruit. The "female" flowers are the ones that have a short stem and seam to have a "miniature" pumpkin on them, and, as you have figured out, these are the ones which make pumpkins. In order to make fruit (pumpkins) the female flowers must be fertilized by the male ones, so you need this plant or another squash-type plant to have open male flowers at the same time. You also need a cooperative insect to do the fertilizing. Secondly, as another person pointed out, the plant may not be mature enough YET to support the pumpkin growth. Also, sometimes if it gets unseasonably cool it can throw off the "fruit" development. I think you are on the right track! Just keep caring for your plant(s). I hope that answers your question.
