How come only men get to keep their hair?

Question

Why is it that only men get to keep their armpit, leg, and face hair (but then cut their head hair so short?) but women are expected to shave/wax/tweeze it all away? Who decided this? If it grows why can't we just keep it instead of getting all conscious?

In some cultures it is acceptable for women to have hair. In the 20's America had what some would call a revolution that ushered in equal rights for women. Well, a Miss Arigailo of NY city started a women's movement in 1926,WFW (Women for Womanhood) that would separate and define womanhood and femininity. The dance hall girls joined, members of Arigailo's movement influenced other women that they should also shave to be more feminine. The men who visited the dance halls would suggest to thier wives when they married how good it is to not have hair being a woman. The submissive women, wives, then began to shave. Eventually it just became the norm just as bluejeans would.

Its a womens choice to shave and such, society is just more accepting of men who with hairy arms/ legs than women with hairy arms or legs.  

The same principle can be used when thinking "why don't men where make up" or indeed "why don't most men shave their arms and legs"

I think arm pit hair looks bad on both sexes.

Men look better with hair on their body, they look strange with really smooth skin.

Women look better with hips and curves, men look better muscular. Maybe it's socially constructed norms of beauty.

Just wow at the first to answers. I don't know why either, but we are too far in the game to change it. All we can do now is get revenge, (first two answers are perfect examples of why!). Just act disgusted at hairy men :)!

I think that alot of people have realized that the golden age of the 50's is long gone and the gender roles have altered quite a bit so go right on ahead and do what is necessary.

i like my husbands chest hair but he keeps his hair down there trimmed neatly. i shave because i dont want to be sweatty under my arms and have monkey legs
