How come people are afraid to tell others how much they earn?

I don't get what's the big deal. A lot of people seem to be very uncomfortable sharing their income. Is it really that personal. Someoen even asked a question about to avoid telling people when they ask, but in a nice way. I am not afraid to tell anyone..At my last job I earned 6.75, before that it was 8.00...Oh no you know how much I earn...

Well I think the thing with that is there are so many people that are to judgemental and i don't care personally but maybe the people that don't want to tell are afraid of being judged

right now I'm unemployed so I'm making nothing. the last job i quit i was making 11.08. I'm not scared. it was against company policy to discuss pay though

because i'm ashamed. i work like a dog and make lots of money and invest it all and still drive a jeep

Yes, it's personal.  No one should have to know what anyone else makes.  It makes for awkward situations.  If people know someone makes much more then that someone may feel inclined to pay for things b/c they feel guilty someone doesn't have as much money.  It's a personal thing that shouldn't be shared.  Money is a weird aspect of life anyway, why add to the 'weirdness' by telling people w hat you earn. and although curious, no one should ever ask you.

There's a lot of scammers and gold-diggers out there.  While most of us out in the world work hard to earn an honest living, there's many who would rather weasel their way into someone's life to steal.  People who have spent a lot of time building their financial security don't want to publicize their earnings and attract even more proverbial wolves to their door.

I didn't think it was a big deal when I was younger, but now there is no way in h**l I'd let people know what I make.

I'm not, I get paid $10-$12.50 an hour, yes it changes. Be jealous people.
