Question:

How come people don't like to carpool?

Funny how...

Funny how people complain about the price of gasoline, but still buy SUVs that get 10 miles to a gallon.

Funny how people complain about how much traffic is on the road, and all the pollution, yet no one wants to organize/participate in a carpool.

Carpooling not only saves the environment, it saves the money in your wallet too. Folks could split the cost of gas and tolls with their passengers.

Are people in general just too fundamentally selfish in this respect?

  1. yes they are and they also are in to much of a hurry

  2. Most people don't carpool because it's not convenient.  You have to adapt to the schedules of others, both coming and going to work.  If you have something that prevents you from carpooling, the others may not appreciate being left in the lurch.

Houston has a great system in place.  Solo drivers can pull up to the bus terminal and pick up passengers willing to ride in or out with them.  I was a frequent passenger and occasional driver.  Folks were always cordial and frequently friendly enough to chat the entire way into town.  Drivers benefited by being able to use the commuter lanes and passengers saved bus fare.

  3. I think it is a matter of convenience too. If you need to leave work early  you would have to either leave everyone that rode with you stranded or they would all have to leave with you. If you are sick you would have to contact everyone and tell them they need to make other arrangements. I carpooled for a while and those are the problems I ran into but for the most part it ran smoothly.

  4. its the idea that you have to time your day around other people in your carpool and that you have to sit with them all cramped up in the car for a long time and theyre nosy

  5. yeah, you've got it about right.

Fill it up with the last of our fossil fuels, please.  I have to get to McDonalds.

  6. I think you're generalizing too much.  Many people do carpool, and enjoy it.  Many companies have vanpool programs as well.

  7. I used to carpool with two women........

One was ALWAYS late, smelled like cigarettes, whined and complained all the way to work.

The other was offended that I preferred to sleep over listening to them gossip and list all the things they hate about men.

    I drive alone now.

  8. More like independent.  Every body wants to go their own way.  If you work in the same factory or same job site, it only makes sense to carpool.   Most of the time it works fine.  It really depends on the people.   Do they want to organize.  Seems like too many grey cells have to go to work to do the figuring.

  9. people are selfish, lazy, live too far apart, and dont work at the same place as their friends. or when they finaly make friends with co-workers, they live so far apart that they would use less gas by driveing themselves than one car going all over town.
