How come people dont think science today isnt just like alchemy?

Why would it be? Alchemy is the combination of chemistry, physics, mathematics, philosophy, astrology, medicine, spirituality, semiotics, art and a few other things.  It's shamanism, passed off as science.

A lot of people see science as just that sort of shamanism, actually.  It's an attitude known as "scientism", revering the trappings of science while understanding none of the substance.  It's why things like infinitely diluted holistic "cures", UFOlogy and healing magnets have so many adherents.

By and large, science isn't motivated by greed.  The driving force behind alchemy was cheap gold.  But then, if people could  see how heavily scientists are pressured toward politically correct conclusions, they might indeed conclude alchemy is alive and well.
