Question:

How come people dont think we get protien?

Im vegan and im CONSTANTLY asked "where do you get ur protien?" Do they not relize that nuts, tofu, and beans all have protien?

  1. Have you seen the questions here? Vegetarians asking how they can they get enough protein. If some vegetarians themselves don;t know the answer, why are you surprised that non vegetarians don't know either?

    The difference I see in this forum is if a user identifies himself/herself as a  vegetarian (who knows if they really are)and asks the "protein question" you mentioned, the answers are generally polite and helpful. But if a non vegetarian asks the same question, the answers tend to be rude and sarcasticeven condescending.  Even if that person is just asking for information. As if the general populaion is expected and  should automatically know what a vegetarian is and what is it all about.

    I admit that there are a lot of the so called "trolls" who post annoying questions and answers. Perhaps that's the reason for the "us against them" mentality so prevalent here.

  4. we don't think you get enough protein , because for one thing you don't know how to spell the Word PROTEIN. You do not get protein from veggies so you need to compensate with complex carbs. and you are always asking questions about your own health. that is my honest answer to my question.

  5. The protein in nuts, tofu and beans is mostly incomplete protein and what you need is complete protein.

    Complete protein requires adequate amounts of all the 8 essential amino acids including lysine and methionine.  Beans, peas, lentils, nuts and tofu are all light in methionine so they are mostly incomplete protein and bread, cereals, pasta and rice are all light in lysine so they are mostly incomplete protein.  To get adequate amounts of both lysine and methionine you need to combine bread, cereals, rice or pasta with beans, peas, lentils, nuts or tofu.  This combining of incomplete protein foods to get complete protein is known as protein complementing.

  6. the average meat eater gets twice the amount of protien they need in a day.  use that fact next time someone acts like they know something and they really dont.

    there have been many studies showing that excessive consumption of many plants, including soy and lavender (I'm gonna focus on the soy, since thats pretty much where your protein is), can cause a hormonal imbalance in men.

    This is because soy contains high levels of phytoestrogen, a plant hormone similar to the human female hormone estrogen.

    You ever wonder why Asian cultures like Chinese or Japanese are traditionally smaller in stature? Their diets are focused around soy. This slows testosterone production and makes for a smaller body.

    Also, you ever wonder why those Asian men have small...well...you know?

    Yeah, thats why.

    I'm a vegetarian and my mom is always worried that if I get pregnant I'll miscarry because of lack of protein.

  11. Because if you eat out all the time as a vegan, you don't get enough protein.

    Try living 5 miles from the nearest supermarket with no car, but with a Wawa and a bunch of fast food places within walking distance.

    Sure, if you customize your diet and cook all of your meals you can do whatever you want, but some people don't have that luxury.

  15. Do you realized that EVERY LIVING THING on the planet has protein in it?  One cannot avoid protein.  You'd have to just stop eating to avoid it.

  16. In real fact, no many people know the answer, they are not into this and therefore, we need to let them know, bring the awareness and hopefully in future, when they get to understand more, they would even choose veg. diet.

  17. i was a vegetarian for a little while i decided to give it up for lent.

    It is very important to get protein and those food choices are excellent ways for obtaining protein. People may not realize that these choices have protein because they are unaware they do. Therefore, they need to research before they decide to question your health.

  22. A lot of vegans/vegetarians don't get enough protein or vitamins in their diet because of the lack of meat. Protein isn't the only vital thing you should have in your diet. Plus, the vegetarian I know subsists on carbs such as bread, pastas, potatoes. She only eats salads and fruits, and doesn't think much about nuts, tofu, or beans.

  23. Yes they have protein, but how much protein do they provide you compared to taking it straight from the best source? Is it 1/2 ? a 1/4th ?

  25. my mother honestly thinks all i eat are carrots. carrots are not meat and therefore have no protein.

    my italian co-worker thinks i'm going to die because i don't eat salami.

    my boss is convinced the only way to get protein is to eat an entire chicken.

    i think people just need an argument - we are pretty easy to pick on if you think about it...

  27. Most people associate protein with meat. Yes, the question can get old, but feel good about doing your part to educate the masses.

  28. You realize that you probably don't eat everything you named daily? There are many different amino acids. Those foods you named do not contain all of them required to build muscles. Unlike with meat were you pretty much get all you need in one package that tastes great too :P

  31. I am vegitarian but not vegan.  I get my protein from nuts, beans, and dairy.  When people ask you that just say "there are ways" and make it mysterious.

    But people who are meat-eaters are usually commited to meat and they don't get protein from anything else.
