How come rain never gets in Post Office "Mail Boxes" at my post office?

There can be one heck of a rain/wind storm and the letters (Mail) never get wet. Why?

  1. They are designed so that the opening is under a part that prevents direct raining into the box. Look carefully the next time you see one and notice that the curved cover is always over the cover of the hatch as an umbrella.
