Question:

How come some people say 'Qur'an' instead of 'The Qur'an'?

Sometimes I see people ask questions like, "What does Qur'an say about..." even college professors use this type of grammar when using the word Qur'an. What is the direct translation of Qur'an in english? Why not say 'the' Qur'an? Is there a grammatical rule or reason for this?

  1. Salam for you Mila .In this yahoo question and answer we do not use the right grammar oftenly. So we read and write Qur'an,the Qur'an,Koran, the Koran. just is in the same meaning  the holy book of Islam for its followers. What does Qur'an say it is personafication of Qur'an. The important thing on this issue is whether the readers understand what is written by each of askers and answerers It maybe wrong grammatically.

  2. in the quran itself, the quran has been called both,''Quran'' and ''the Quran''

and also when u say Quran, there's only one Quran in the world, not a thousands copies like in the bible and the torah

  3. Well as a noun, the word "the" is needed.  If its a proper noun....then not really.   We are told the quran itself will defend us on the day of judgment.....so in that sense it could be a proper noun (but i had to use the word "the" to make the sentence sound right)....

Some people could care less about grammar though....like me

  4. No reason, just slackness or don't care or don't know any better.  We still know what they're on about.

  5. well we don't always speak grammatically accurate, that's why.  ofcourse it should be...... *The Qur'an when accurately stating, just like *The Bible, *The Torah. :)

    does that answer u?

  6. Technically, it's wrong to say Qu'ran without the 'the' unless one is using is as the word itself. It is a unique object, and thus is meant to receive the (instead of a, or some, for example). It's the same for the Bible, the Torah, and the world.

  7. Whether it's  Koran, Quaran, Qur'an, Quran, or Quoran -

In the end it all means the same thing: The Muslims Holy Book =) People spell it differently. I use 'Quaran'.
