How come some pokemon cant take more vitamins?

I tried to give a protien to my blazekin (which i got in a trade), and it said "it wont have any effect" why is that?

it cant have more because the max they could have is ten for each stat. It is to help EV training. The most EVs you can get is 510. the most EV's each stat could get is 255. So each vitaming raises a stat 10 EV points which gives you total of 100 in that stat because you can only give it 10. So then if you dont EV train, you can max out 5 of the six stats in vitamins and then give the last stat 1 vitamin and you will be good

This will be a complicated explanation, if you do not feel like knowing how the game works and all, disregard this

Every pokemon can gain stat points, these stat points are gained by beating other Pokemon. If I were to train on Magikarp only, my speed would be extremely high. All Pokemon give what is called an Effort Value, or EV for short. Four EVs will give you one extra stat point. However, you can only have a total of 510 EVs, 255 is the maximum you can have one stat. So, you can have 252 (The highest number divisible by four) in two stats, and four in one other stat (Mainly something like HP). Now, Vitamins will give you Pokemon 10 EVs, but they can't give them anymore than 100 EVs in a stat. You will have to battle other Pokemon to get above 100 EVs.

What that means is, the pokemon is probably at the limit of EVs it can gain, so it won't take any vitamins

It can only take 6. basically, u have to learn a thing or two about EV's. they're hidden points u get whenever u battle certain pokemon. ever 4 gives u one more point in w/e stat (ie, HP attack etc). every pokemon yields a certain EV. ur pokemon can gain up to 510 EV's by the time is gets to lvl 100. but only 255 in a certain stat. So it's never good to use only day care or rare candies until you are sure it has 510 EV's. but vitamins give out 10 EV's to a certain stat but a pokemon can only use 6 per stat. so it's either u've already given him 6 or he already has 510
