How come some singers with an accent sing and their accent is gone?

I sing in whatever tone I believe the song would sound best in.. Newfie, American, Aussie...... I understand what you're saying.

I know some singers like Amy Winehouse say that they grew up listening to American singers/songs... and ended up emulating that style.. I suppose it depends on the style of the song/music, too.
