  1. It means fire department of New York, they probably just call it that instead..

  2. its FDNY because it stands for Fire Department of New York, not New York Fire Department.

Also, people may confuse the abbreviation with NYPD (its only 1 letter different, isnt it?), which is the abbr. for New York Police Department.

  3. When the City of New York was organized, proper English was still used by its founding fathers. The original title of the fire department read The Fire Department of the City of New York. Over the years the acronym FDNY was used and it has stayed like that.

Each public department of the City of NY use to read just like FDNY, but as the times changed, so did the way people addressed the different department's names. FDNY stayed mainly out of tradition by the firefighters.

  4. It just means Fire Department of New York, which sounds better or something, I guess. Dunno.:) One says President of the United States, not the United States President. It's just the subject, I think.

  5. not sure, but it stands for Fire Dept. of New York

  6. This is because this Fire Department is the department used for the whole state. It is not just a local one, but goes everywhere in NY.

  7. just the way it iz dude

  8. FDNY is a city agency - not a state agency.  NYPD is actually NYCPD another city agency.  The names have been that way as long as I've known them.

  9. Maybe because NYFD looks like it would be pronounced like "Knifed"?
