how come the computer doesn't just have an on/off switch? you always have to go to start, select turn off computer and wait until it tells you it's safe before you can finally push the power button.

it would be a lot easier if the computer just has an on/off button like a tv

  1. The reason for this is Windows has to shut down safely because if it doesn't then the files that are running will become corrupt and your windows won't work anymore. A TV does not have to run files like that so there is nothing to worry about.

  2. It does, you can go to power option in the control panel and click the advanced tab and it will say when I press power button on my computer ---------.. Set that to shutdown my computer...

    Hope This Helps!

  3. Actually, you can configure your power button on the front of your PC to shut down the pc...this is in the bios. Please check your motherboard or system manual.

Basically it acts like the start menu shut down...it will do a safe shut down. I know this because my 1 1/2 year old daughter shut my pc down a few minutes ago by pressing the button and it said windows was shutting down.

Dell's do this as well...press the button and it safely shuts down.  Now if you hold the button down then it will completely shut down hard and maybe mess up windows.

  4. The off button is:

    - shutdown

    - press the power-on button 1-2 secs (but under the "power" panel you must select that pressing the power on button does a shutdown, not a hibernate.

It is a matter of safety. If you ever have been around little kids who see a button and press it with a wide grin on their faces....

  5. Because, unlike a TV, there are steps the computer needs to take before it powers down.

  6. It does but for turning the computer on and off the right way is to follow the format and following the formate your programs works better

  7. technically it does, going to start and shut down just gives the computer a chance to close all the programs running one at a time and is better for the computer... if ur that impatient just hold down the power button for about 10 sec. and it will just go off... i dont suggest that unless u have to (i.e. computer is frozen) because all the programs just... stop, obviously... so if one of them are processing or in  the middle of something there is a chance that it could mess that one up.

  8. no. if u have ATX or MicroATX cabinet u wont wait until the message appears "its safe to turn off your computer"

and one more thing off the computer in improper way like switching off the TV. U can modify the settings in your display properties. go to display properties go to screensaver tab and click power then go to advanced tab and there is a check box like "when i press my power button" like that click the drop down button then click shutdown and apply the settings and try it
