How come the houses in California dont have basements ,i really would like to know dave?

It depends on where you live.  If it's cold and there's a need to store outdoor furniture or to store canning and food products then a basement is natural.  There are many areas in California where homes have basements.  However where the weather is warm, why build a basement?  It costs less to build one and its not necessary.
