  1. They do, it's just that they don't use it i.e

    Henry VII [Henry Tudor]

    Elizabeth II [Elizabeth Tudor]

    James I [James Stuart]

    Elizabeth II [Elizabeth Tudor]

  2. ..'cause they have oodles of first names

  3. Names behave differently for Kings than for the rest of us. They have family names, (Elizabeth II is Elizabeth Windsor) it is just that they don't need them. To give you some perspective, in a hundred years Madona might be a footnote (if she is lucky). The chapter will be called Elizabeth II, and the book will be called the Windsors.

Individually, Monarchs just have a first name and a number; there is, and can only ever be one Elizabeth II.

To call her "Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, by the Grace of God, of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and of Her other Realms and Territories Queen, Head of the Commonwealth, Defender of the Faith" is a bit redundant, because you knew who was being refered to by "Her Majesty".

  4. they do have last names It was Elizabeth Tudor but I guess they think it is easier to just say Elisabeth 1st

  5. Under the "1917 Letters Patent" monarchs, princes and princesses officially do not have a surname. It is considered unnecessary. You never use their last name in conversation or in a formal announcement. You will never see the phrase "Prince William Windsor".

    ----------------

Of course, a lot of bureacracy has occurred since 1917. When they are in a position that they have to fill out a form or a database where the system would break down they just use the royal family name of Windsor.  I imagine that he is William Windsor in the military databases.

    -------------------------------

The youngest son of Queen Elizabeth is choosing to raise his children without the styles that they are legally entitles to have. His daughter (age 4) is referred to as "The Lady Louise Windsor" instead of "Princess Louise". However, this is a personal choice. They can always change their mind, or when Louise reaches the age of eighteen she is entitled to be called "Princess Louise" for the rest of her life. Likewise her brother (age 7 months) is named James Alexander Philip Theo. When he reaches his majority he is entitled to the style "Prince James". Although his parents could call him "Lord James Windsor" they have decided to call him "Viscount Severn" using one of the minor titles of his father. This name highlights the Severn River region near Wales where his mother grew up.

  6. They are of the Royal House of Tudor,or are referred to as Tudor.Royals don't use last names the sane way we do.They use Royal House Names and title names more than they do surnames.

The current Queen,Elizabeth II,is of The Royal House of Windsor. She can use Windsor as her last name.

  7. Well, they do - and they don't. They have family/'dynastic' names, as other respondents have said. But, technically, they don't need them, as they 'are' the State, so there's no problem deciding which 'Elizabeth', 'Charles', 'Louis', 'Wilhelm', etc, they are from the thousands or hundreds of thousands in the country with the same name. QE II, I believe, doesn't even have a passport!, she is "The United Kingdom" and can't issue herself one!!!

And, I think you'll find, the 'House' may be Windsor, but the Queen declared all her heirs to be "Mountbatten-Windsors". It was as "Anne Mountbatten-Windsor" that her daughter signed her Wedding Registry. (I think Charles and William may be exceptions, but they only sign things, at present, as "Charles" and "William", with or without a "P" for 'Prince', anyway.)

  8. i never tought of it

    :l

  9. The kings and queens of England/Scotland/UK have always had last names (surnames), it is just that they have no need to use them.  Our present Queen Elizabeth's surname is Windsor.

  10. This was in the 'Lazzlo Letters'! I'm happy to see it again!

  11. they take the name of the house they belong to

    such as windsor

    saxe cobourg

    stuart

    tudor

    plantagenet

  12. huh? i never thought about it. they do have one, people just never use it. like it's queen elizabeth windsor. i suppose they're like cher or madonna, they don't need them.
