  1. They've all got it pretty well covered, particularly Sandman.

But are you saying that you think that managers shouldn't wear them or do you think that coaches in other sports should? Cause I really don't want to EVER see Don Nelson in shorts and a b-ball jersey.

  2. Uhhh tradition?  Im really not sure.  Good question =/  Thats gonna p**s me off all day lol

  3. The actual reason is because only baseball managers are supposed to come out into the field of play during the game.

  4. Each league probably has a dress code for coaches.

  5. Its because managers back in the day were also players, and the rule used to be that a manager/coach was eligible if they wore a jersey (this was way back when guys who coach and play at the same time)

So its mostly out of tradition for that, and thats why you see coaches still wearing uniforms

EDIT: here is what i was looking for, out of a book

After the turn of the century, those guys who had formerly been captains of their teams, unwilling to depart from the game entirely when they were no longer capable of playing it, began to be sought after to manage the teams on the field. This would seem sensible, as these folks had years of experience with the nuances of the game, and leaving the decision-making to someone in the dugout allowed the players to concentrate on ... well, playing.

Apparently, the habit of wearing a uniform wasn't something the new managers were too keen on abandoning - so they didn't. The notable exception was Connie Mack (pictured above), legendary manager of the Philadelphia Athletics, who in his later years never left the dugout. Why? Because in their infinite wisdom, the Lords of Baseball had decided that if it was good enough to be a tradition, it was good enough to be a rule. Mack liked suits. Baseball didn't like anyone not in a uniform on the field.

This rule, however, appears to be more of a league edict than a "rule." The only reference to such things in the official rules of major league baseball is a 1957 rule requiring coaches to be in uniform, specifically referring to first and third-base coaches. It's suspected that the rule has been interpreted to mean any person whose presence on the field fills a coaching capacity.

  6. Its mainly because of the uniform the players wear. I wouldn't wanna see Jeff van Gundy in short shorts and a tank top. Baseball uniforms are the more professional looking uniform I guess and managers wearing suits like in the NBA would look ridiculous as they made a pitching change on a 105 degree day in Texas.

  7. Its just random and its not like a hockey coach is gonna wear hockey equipment

  8. idk i would be kinda wierd without it

  9. I think tradition and the rules state that a player or manager must be in uniform in order to be on the field.

In the 50's or 60's, there was a manager that wore suits in the dugout so he had to have his pitching coach make a pitching change!

Also, back in the early days, some managers also played so that may also be another reason

  10. Well, it would seem silly for Bill Belichick to wear pads, or pat o'rielly to wear bball shorts, but I guess thats a good question. Hmm...
