  2. New Zealand was a former British colony and like many Pacific island nations such as Fiji, Australia, Pitcairn Island and even Hawaii, they incorporated it into their flag for historical purposes.

  3. It was once a British colony, much like Australia and Canada before both of those became independent nations themselves.

  4. It is still part of the British Commonwealth.  It has the Southern Cross star constellation (only seen in the southern hemisphere) on it as well as the British flag.
